RAS-ACS invites all ACS members to an hour-long phone hangout to discuss:
The competing interests of work-life balance and maintaining one of the core values of surgery, which is patient ownership
What is the impact of duty hours restrictions on creating a shift work mentality in resident training?
Some specialties within surgery, namely acute care surgery and trauma, often schedule surgeons in shifts. Proponents of this system see it as a way to improve work-life balance and reduce burnout. This is in contrast to the more traditional model of surgical care in which a surgeon maintain continuity of care for patients on which they operate. We invite you to weigh-in on this lively discussion.
Guest discussant: Adnan Alesidi, MD, FACS, YFA Chair, member of the ACS Committee on Medical Student Education
