  • 2015 RAS-ACS Symposium: Take Part in the Debate!

"Social Media—Threat to Professionalism and Privacy, or Essential for Current Surgical Practice?" Social media has become an integral part of our private and professional lives. Hospitals, practices, and individual surgeons have websites, blogs, and Facebook accounts, and many surgeons are avid users of Twitter. While social media represents an unprecedented way of engaging colleagues and patients, it also poses challenges and even threats to professionalism and privacy. What should physicians do when they get "friend requests" from their patients? Should attending surgeons be Facebook friends with their residents? How much information about their private lives should/must physicians disclose publicly or on the web? This year's RAS Symposium on social media will take place at the ACS Clinical Congress 2015, Sunday, October 4, 3:00–5:30 pm at McCormick Place, Chicago, IL. We invite ACS Resident Members and Associate Fellows to join the debate by submitting their opinions on the following: Is social media a threat to surgeons' professionalism and privacy or essential for current surgical practice? First place winners in both the "Threat" and "Essential" positions will be invited to present their viewpoints on the topic. Second place finishers for each position will have their submissions published in the ACS Bulletin. Submission Information All submissions must be submitted to rasnews@facs.org.
